Two National Guard Members Marry Before Heading Into Irma

Lauren Durham and Michael Davis are both members of the National Guard, and they were going to be married this week on a beach. The two were deployed indefinitely, though, because of Hurricane Irma.

Instead of being upset that their wedding plans were messed up, they said, “Service before self,” and they got married in a convention center, in their fatigues, in a hangar filled with rescue vehicles and other rescue workers. The wedding was officiated by their best friend, also in the National Guard, who also happens to be a notary.

While they didn’t have a formal reception, Lauren and Michael said there were snacks. Lauren said, “MREs do have Skittles in them, so we’re pretty excited.”
