Getting Your Spiritual Footing

February 07, 2018 | Sharon Davis

So, how have you been doing with the Star 991 “30-Day Pledge?” Hopefully, it has helped you center on God, in your life, around all you do, and how you think.

My pastor was talking recently about getting our “spiritual footing.” As much as we may have things to complain about, it eats up our time and our emotions.

These days, challenges are coming on hard and fast, personally (just check your friends’ social media posts!), nationally, and worldwide. But as my pastor said, it’s senseless to complain.

The Bible tells us not to be jolted by life’s difficulties: “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange was happening to you….” (1 Peter 4:12) Peter was writing to Christians facing persecution for their faith. We’re not facing what the early Christians did, and there are Christians around the world today facing peril for their faith. Here in the U.S., we are still basically free to worship as we please. But there is an enemy of our soul. Even if a government is not persecuting us, we are persecuted by spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12) It’s an attack, either way.

How do we cope? By becoming God-centered.

Our response matters as far as maintaining our strength, even (or especially) when it’s God strength that brings us through. We can surrender to our feelings, or we can surrender to the Spirit. And the fruit of the Spirit is beautiful. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22)
