LOCAL FEELS: From Homelessness To Being Honored As One Of NYC’s Top Volunteers

Local Feels

When Darrell Astwood’s sister passed away in 2012, his whole life changed. He had been living with his sister at her apartment but he was forced to give it up after a while. Then he fell into a cycle of addiction. After nearly two years of being homeless and addicted to drugs, he decided it was time to get clean, so he enrolled himself into a recovery program though Project Hospitality in Staten Island. Now Darrell’s giving back! He’s volunteered more than 2,400 hours, and because of this, he was recently honored at Carnegie Hall for being on the New York City’s top volunteers. After the ceremony, Darrell went right back to Staten Island so he didn’t miss a day of volunteering.
