Local Feels

Principal Akbar Cook of West Side High School in Newark has been behind some wonderful programs for his students. Recently he came up with the “Lights On” program to give students something to do, a place to hang out, on Friday nights after school. But in addition to that, Principal Cook built a laundry program at West Side High, where students can bring do their laundry for free whenever they want. Wonderful programs as they may be, funding is expensive, but here’s a blessing: Oprah Winfrey heard about West Side High’s “Lights On” and laundry programs and paid a visit to West Side High to donate $500,000 to keep it all going! The “Lights On” program, instead of being just Friday nights, will now be able to run 3 nights a week all summer long.
