Clarence Purvis is 93 years old, and a few years ago, he lost his wife of 63 years when she passed away. Toward the end of their time together, the two of them would eat at a place called Smith’s restaurant every day, just to enjoy a good meal and some time together.
Now that Carolyn is gone physically, Clarence has found another way to keep her spirit very much alive and honor her memory. He still goes to Smith’s quite a bit, and when he eats there, he sets up a picture of his beloved late wife so that he can, in a manner, share a meal with her.
A lot of people tried to discourage him at first, worried that maybe this might make him sadder about the fact that Carolyn is gone, but Clarence looks at it very differently. He says, “True love never has a happy ending because true love never ends.”
Clarence told a local TV station that interviewed him about his tradition of eating with her picture, “Ain’t nobody loved one another more than me and my wife loved one another…she was always with me when we were livin’, [and] she’s with me now.”
